GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Greencastle National Guard Armory, tried a different form of fundraising on Thursday evening. Their inaugural pancake supper turned out to be a success for both organizations.

"It was a good effort," said alumni association president Steve McMains. "The National Guard supported us, and we made money for both organizations."

The alumni association has done spaghetti dinners in the past, but this was the first time it had tried pancakes. Some other fundraising efforts this year have included a booth at the Putnam County Fair as well as at Greencastle's homecoming last Friday.

"We're just trying to see what works," McMains said. "I think it went real smoothly. Everybody did a good job."

The association served approximately 150 people at the event. McMains said he would like to see that number grow, but thinks more people will come with time.

"For the first time, it's not bad. It takes time for people to figure out what you're doing," McMains said.

The proceeds for the event will be split between the alumni association and the National Guard Family Readiness program. Because the program receives federal funds, they cannot ask for donations. They can, however, accept them.

Dan Wathen, right, serves a patron at Thursday night's Greencastle Alumni Association pancake supper as Becky Reagan looks on. The supper benefitted both the alumni association's scholarship fund as well as the National Guard's Family Readiness program.

"They don't always have the money to do a lot of things at times," McMains said.

Additionally, the armory also provided a place for the event besides the high school. McMains said he hopes this move attracts more patrons who aren't GHS grads.

On the alumni association's end, the money all goes to its scholarship fund, which gave 11 scholarships to GHS grads this year.

"Mainly, we work on membership and donations, and it all goes to our scholarship fund," McMains said.
