Russellville town board names McAfee water superintendent

Thursday, October 22, 2009

RUSSELLVILLE -- The town board voted to accept additional employment for the water department during its Wednesday meeting.

Jim McAfee has been named assistant water superintendent. He is replacing Chester Leatherman, who retired in July. McAfee took over the job responsibilities Aug. 1.

In other business:

* Board member Jim Rodgers read the 2010 budget and it was accepted as read.

* Clerk-treasurer Sally McAfee had a meeting with a representative from the United States Census Bureau, who stressed the importance of filling out the census form.

A complete count is important because every year the federal government can allocate more than $300 billion to states and communities based, in part, on census data.

It is used to help local decision-makers know where to build new roads, hospitals, child care and senior citizen centers, schools and more. Businesses utilize the data to locate supermarkets, new housing and other facilities.

The census is a count of everyone residing in the U.S. All U.S. residents must be counted, including people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.

The U.S. Constitution requires a national census be taken once every 10 years. It shows the state's population and determines representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In addition, McAfee said there are jobs available with the Census Bureau beginning in November. Open positions include crew leaders, assistant census clerks and census takers. Jobs, such as census takers, pay $13 per hour and $.55 per mile.

For applications, visit the Town Hall or call 435-2371.

* Trick-or-treat hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
