Cloverdale School Board has little on agenda

CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale Community School Corporation board members held their monthly meeting Monday evening but had little on their agenda.

Students of the month were introduced from each of the schools. They were Emily Cumbee from Cloverdale Elementary, Raeanna McFadden from Cloverdale Middle School and Dane and Danielle Grounds from Cloverdale High School.

High school principal Sonny Stoltz introduced science teacher Malinda Mann, who talked about the Vex Robotics Team. Mann applied for and received a grant from Cook Industries last year. She was able to get four robotic kits for her classroom at a cost of $250 per kit.

Students worked two per robot and built their projects and prepared for a large competition in November.

"They entered a competition held in Bloomington that is a lot like a tractor pull. They took first place, pulling 40 pounds not including their robot," said Mann.

Cook offered an additional grant to schools that had already received funds to purchase additional parts for the robots. Mann applied for and received that grant as well.

Students determined the most important pieces of equipment and were able to purchase motors and wheels for their robot.

Stoltz also talked about the new agricultural center and mentioned that students have grown poinsettias that can be purchased. They also plan to have Easter lilies in the spring and will use the facility year round.

The completion of the athletic locker room was mentioned.

"The 1966-67 style locker room was a dump, now it is state-of-the-art," said Stoltz.
