Town looking to make water improvements

Thursday, December 17, 2009

RUSSELLVILLE -- The town is looking to receive a disaster recovery grant to make some updates at the water department.

The grant will allow for meters to be installed, lines to be looped, a filtration system to be installed at the water plant and possibly a new water tower.

However, the grant requires an income survey to be completed in order to establish the average income of the town's residents. The surveys were mailed with monthly water bills, but only 50 percent of them were returned.

Town Council President Don Reddish stressed the importance of the surveys being completed for the grant. Council members agreed to go door-to-door on an undetermined date.

In addition, the town is still seeking an engineering firm to draw up plans for the project.

During the regular meeting Wednesday, the council gave three readings of two ordinances. The first was a salary ordinance for 2010. It established salaries for town employees including town council members.

The next ordinance amended penalties on overdue water bills. The town was charging 10 percent on total balance due, which was in violation of the law. The amendment states there will be a 10 percent penalty on the monthly charge.

In other business, a roller skating party with Santa will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 21 at the community center.
