CHS struggle against Bulldogs

MONROVIA -- Cloverdale's girls struggled handling the basketball against Monrovia's full-court pressure Friday, committing 42 turnovers in a 48-29 loss in a West Central Conference game at Branch McCracken Memorial Gym.

"Forty-two turnovers doesn't give you a chance to win the game," Clovers' coach Tom Anderson said. "It's something we've been working on and concentrating on and we thought we were getting better, making strides. We only had 18 turnovers in our last game.

"You have to give credit to Monrovia for putting good pressure on, but we didn't come to meet the passes and we didn't screen or take what was there. That's the frustrating part of it."

Monrovia (2-7, 1-2 WCC) committed 19 turnovers, an advantage of 23 possessions in that category. It was too many for the Clovers (1-7, 0-2 WCC) to give up.

The Clovers played the Bulldogs close in the first half. Down 17-8 in the second quarter, They went on a 8-2 run to narrow the deficit to 19-16. Mariah Oetken and Sam Williams each scored three points in the run.

Monrovia's Morgan Knieper made a 2-point field goal and the Clovers missed four straight free throws to close out the first half trailing 21-16.

Breegan Anderson had a 2-point basket to open the second half for Cloverdale to cut Monrovia's lead to three, but the Bulldogs scored the next seven points for a 28-18 advantage.

The Clovers made a brief stop by scoring four straight to get back within six before Monrovia scored 10 straight to take a 38-22 lead. Cloverdale never got closer than 14 behind after that.
