GHS sweeps WCC swim titles

Greencastle's Walter Chiarella pulls ahead of Cascade's Josh Lamm on his way to victory in the 100 breaststroke.

GREENCASTLE -- With snow falling for several days last week, weather was the topic of conversation at Saturday's WCC swim meet, even inside humid Erdmann Natatorium.

Had the days off given swimmers rest or gotten them out of practice?

"School was cancelled these last two days, and we had already planned to go easier on them Friday and they'd have a little bit of rest and get a chance to swim at least somewhat fresh," Greencastle coach Luke Beasley said. "So we had high expectations coming in."

The expectations weren't without base, as the GHS boys took 11-of-12 events and the girls won eight-of-12.

"We expected some really good results, and they exceeded my expectations. I think they exceeded their own expectations -- a lot of swimmers surprised themselves."

The story of the day for the girls was Melissa Ball, who broke WCC records in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The butterfly was especially notable, as she dropped the conference record from 1:03.75 to 59.96.

"(Melissa) deserves it. She's been working hard and her attention and focus in practice has been so good," Beasley said. "We've been waiting for a result like this."

Elsewhere for the girls, Beasley noted the performances of Sarah Dory (third in IM and seventh in 100 back), Melanie Bittles (third in 50 free, second in butterfly) and a couple of other swimmers who had some nice afternoons.

"Sydney Terry is battling injury. She has a very bad knee," Beasley said. "She had surgery on it and she's been fighting through pain in practice and races, and she's still coming through with big results for us. We needed that win in the 100 backstroke, and Sydney came through for us."

Senior Sara Culler got her first individual conference title in the 500.

"That was something she really wanted and everybody wanted to see her achieve," Beasley said.

Other winners for the Lady Tiger Sharks included Natasha Aring in the IM and all three relays.

For the boys, Walter Chiarella won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke in what his coach called "his best meet of the year." Mitchell Ball picked up a victory in the 200 IM. Jesse Elkins, like Terry for the girls, won a pair of individual events in spite of injury problems.

"Jesse's been dealing with a lot of back problems, some nerve damage, so that was impressive for him," Beasley said.

The Tiger Sharks' other two victories in individual swimming events came from Jay Guffey, who was seeing his first action of the season.

"Jay Guffy, in his first meet with us, split a 22.5 in the medley. I though he swam a pretty solid 50 and a pretty solid 100, but we have higher goals for him, certainly," Beasley said.

Freshman diver Matt Simms ran away from the field, besting teammate Caleb Stodghill by more than 30 points with a 177.40 to capture victory.

Like the girls, the boys also capture all three relays.

While there is still work to be done, Beasley is excited to see things paying off for his teams.

"It's very exciting for them because they've been working so hard over Christmas break," Beasley said. "I think it's so thrilling for them to see the results in the pool."

For South Putnam, the lone victory of the day came in the girls' 100 breaststroke. Junior Jessica York pulled ahead of two Cascade swimmers in the final lap to win one of the most exciting races of the day.

"That was a really good race. That was probably the best race I saw all day. You could see she really wanted that at the finish," said Eagle coach Emily Coers.

York wasn't the only swimmer Coers noted, though. With some young swimmers, she expressed her happiness with the way the team is performing heading into the stretch run.

"We're a pretty young team, and I think the freshman girls are starting to pick up on their intensity and realize what high school swimming is all about," Coers said.

For the girls, who came through with a third-place finish, one freshman is really standing out.

"My 500 swimmer Morgan Deszi has dropped over a minute in the season," Coers said. "She's two seconds away from under seven, so that's what we're hoping for Monday."

For the boys, who finished fourth, Coers made special note of one senior.

"Trent Vickrey, my senior sprinter, did really well today," Coers said. "I'm happy overall with how we did."

The Eagles boys' were led by third-place finishes from Darrick Grundlock and Jake Gould, in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

For North Putnam, a couple of fifth-place team finishes might have been disappointing, but coach Wesley Richardson was upbeat.

"I thought we did well. We weren't able to practice much over the holiday season because of the weather. Then being out two days on Thursday and Friday kind of put us in a bind," Richardson said. But, overall, I think we did pretty well.

"I thought Jeremy Ban, Colten Smith and Michelle Harper, Halsey Foltz, and Caroline Byrd did fairly well. I was pleased with what I saw," he added.

Ban led the boys, with a second place in the 100 free and third in the 50 free. Harper was second in the IM and fifth in the 100 free.

"As things progress, I think we'll see a lot more out of them. I'm happy with the way they performed -- everyone as a whole," Richardson said.

With conference behind them, the teams all return to dual meets. The Eagles visit North Montgomery at 5:30 p.m. today. Greencastle travels to Cascade at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. North Putnam is off until Jan. 19, when it visits Speedway at 6 p.m.
