CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale High School girls' basketball season reached a new level of frustration on Monday night. West Vigo's Vikings, arriving with just two wins, overwhelmed Cloverdale's Clovers 51-21 in the non-conference game.

Cloverdale coach Tom Anderson expected a close game between two games with similar records.

"I thought as far as the rest of the season goes (it) was our best chance of a victory. And I was looking for a very competitive game," Anderson said.

Instead, West Vigo held Cloverdale to 18 percent (6-33) shooting from the floor, stole the ball 14 times and dominated the rebounding 42-21.

The most frustrating part for Anderson is he sees the Clovers improving in practice.

"That's what frustrating because we (coaches) see improvement in practice, but in our last couple of games we have actually gotten worse," Anderson said.

"We spent hours this past week on dribbling, change of pace, stop and go, pulling the ball back, protecting the ball, dribbling lower, closer to your body. All those things and we get in a game and... you're not going to correct anything in one week, but we've done things now from the very first day that still we get in a game and can't do."

Cloverdale trailed 17-5 after one quarter and no less than 12 of West Vigo's points came from offensive rebounds.

"The rebounding was horrible. Rebounding just killed us," Anderson said.

Cloverdale trailed 29-14 at halftime and 36-19 going into the final quarter.

Paige Gutierrez led Cloverdale with six points and three steals. Holly McCammon, normally Cloverdale's top scorer, struggled through a 2-19 shooting night with just five points, but grabbed six rebounds, had four steals and blocked one shot.

Cloverdale's junior varsity overcame a scoreless first quarter to earn a 22-17 victory.

Cloverdale returns to action on Friday in a West Central Conference game at Cascade.
