Pinewood Derby slated for Sunday

Thursday, January 14, 2010

This weekend will host a "blast from the past." That's right, in dusting off some memories from your youth, participate in a Pinewood Derby Race and help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.

The Greencastle Cub Scout Pack 99 and the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department will be co-hosting a community-wide Pinewood Derby event on Sunday, at Deer Meadow School. Registration is 1 to 2 p.m. with Cub Scout Pack 99 racing starting at 2 p.m. and open youth and adult classes to follow.

Each entry is guaranteed three races, with trophies awarded to the top three places in each division. Trophies also awarded for best of show in Cub Scout, youth and adult divisions, most cautious driver and best 100th anniversary of scouting theme.

Greencastle Cub Scout Pack 99 purchased a high-tech, six-lane computerized track with generous donations from local businesses and citizens about three years ago. The new plastic 48-foot, six-lane track has a computerized start and finish line which records race speeds, determines first through sixth place in each heat, organizes brackets and heats according to race speeds, and can break up the final results by adult, youth, pack and den members.

Anyone who hasn't seen the Pinewood Derby in a few years is invited to enter a car or stop by to watch.

Pack 99 Cub Scouts are free. Open division entries are $3. Pinewood Derby Kits are $5, available at the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Office, 405 S Bloomington St. Official rules are available at the Parks Office.

The Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Pinewood Derby Building Workshop at their office from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
