Still time to reduce library fines, give back to community

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- There is still time for Putnam County Public Library patrons to reduce their fines by bringing in canned food or paper products to the library, 103 E. Popular St.

For another week or until Jan. 23, patrons who bring donations will have $1 per item subtracted from overdue fines. Only fines will be waived, not charges for lost or damaged materials.

The Food for Fines program is a great way for patrons to help local food pantries restock supplies after the holidays and get their library accounts back in good standing.

Donated items will be gladly accepted even if a patron doesn't have fines on their account. Suggested non-perishable items include canned fruit, vegetables, meat, soup, powdered milk, cereal, peanut butter, paper towels, facial tissue and toilet paper. No outdated items can be accepted.

The Read Away Fines program will also continue until Jan. 23 for younger patrons to reduce overdue fines, while fostering an interest in books.

The program is for children age 18 years or younger to earn a $2 reduction in fines for every 15 minutes of reading. Check in at the children's department desk before reading to reduce fines.

For more information on either program, call the library at 653-2755 ext. 100.
