Eagle greets passers-by on 231

Eagle "Patrick Henry" sits proudly amid the nest built for him by Putnam County resident Ted Yarhaus. The bird was made by Yarhaus to sit atop a fallen tree in the yard of his home on Hwy. 231 one-mile north of Fincastle.

ROACHDALE -- If you are driving north on U.S. Hwy 231 just past Fincastle, you might want to catch a look at "Patrick Henry," a ceramic eagle nesting in the top of a fallen tree.

Putnam County resident Ted Yarhaus created the bird.

"I made the nest and wanted an eagle for it so we went to a ceramics class at TZ and I made the head," he said laughingly. "Somebody in the class had a pot they were going to throw away and I saw it would make a perfect body for my bird."

Yarhaus then found a black and white boa to wrap around the body and added some white feathers.

"We went to Big Lots and I found a boa left over from Halloween. It was perfect," he said.

Yarhaus created the bird and the nest for fun.

"Patrick Henry asks all who pass by to give a little toot-toot if they can see him from the highway," he said.

  • That is cool. I had a real eagle nesting near my house for a couple of years and was fun to watch.
