Tiger Cubs take care of Cadets

GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle boy's basketball team jumped to 2-1 in the WCC after an 81-66 win last night over the Cascade Cadets at McAnally Center. The win puts the Tiger Cubs at 4-6 overall this season. Nick Hutchinson and Jordan Hickam led the scoring, with 26 and 18 points respectively.

"I thought it was a really good win," said Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee. "Coming out of our break from Christmas we struggled to try to get ourselves on a roll, and I think we needed a game like this where we could rev up the tempo. It was game where we made things happen."

The Tiger Cubs took the lead early scoring the first nine points of the game. First, Jordan Hickam put up five points, then Nick Hutcheson followed suit by putting up the next four points. GHS rode that momentum and held a 16-8 advantage after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Tiger Cubs held the Cadets scoreless for the first 2:30 to extend their lead. Hutcheson once again provided some timely buckets, along with Spencer Moore, Tyler Lewis and Hickam. Greencastle outscored the Cadets 18-13 in the quarter and went into the break up 34-21

Cascade struck first in the third quarter, but Hickam connected on a three-pointer that helped spur the GHS offense to a 23-point quarter. In addition to Hickam, Lewis and Hutcheson, J.T. Hennette got into the act and scored before the quarter expired. The Tiger Cubs entered the final quarter with a sizable advantage, leading 57-35.

In the final period, the Cadets were able to outscore Greencastle, but their burst was too little too late. GHS put up 15 points in the final quarter and won the contest 81-66. Hutcheson led the team with 26 points, followed by Hickam's 18 and Eric Embry with 10.

Greenlee was pleased with the overall effort of his team Friday, but the one area he voiced some concern about was the team's rebounds.

"I thought our effort was good tonight . . . as our energy level defensively, getting after them, getting a lot of deflections," Greenlee said. "I was a little disappointed in our rebounding, which over the last couple of games has been something I thought we've struggled with a little bit. They are not a big team but I thought they scrapped for the ball on the rebound better than we did. We still had that 'my buddy will get it' type attitude and we need to make sure we shore that up a little bit. Hopefully we can use this as springboard for next week. We have three big games."

The Tiger Cubs will travel to Speedway on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
