Tzouanakis, GMS on outside lock-downs

Monday, January 25, 2010 ~ Updated 11:00 AM

Tzouanakis Intermediate School and Greencastle Middle School have been placed on outside lock-down.

"It's a precautionary move in response to a domestic situation," said Greencastle Community School Corp. Superintendent Bob Green. "Given the events that happened recently in the South Putnam School district, we wanted to be safe instead of sorry."

On Jan. 13, all schools in the South Putnam School district were placed on lock-down after a fatal shooting occurred at a residence directly across the street from Reelsville Elementary School. The victim in that shooting was the mother of a Reelsville Elementary second-grader.

Green said while details on today's situation were sketchy, he believed that Greencastle Schools Safety Officer Shawn Gobert had been contacted by local law enforcement about it.

An outside lock-down, Green said, means "We keep people from entering unless we know who they are and what their business is."

Green was not certain how many students were in the family whose domestic situation led to the lock-down.

"I do know it's more than one," he said.

Green said the schools were being proactive with the lock-downs, and that he didn't feel there was any imminent danger to students.

"Our main thing, as always, is to assure the safety of our staff and students," he said.

Gobert, who is also the principal of GMS, was unavailable for comment. Green said Gobert and TZ principal Dan TeGrotenhuis were in the process of notifying parents about the lock-downs.

More details will be released as they become available.

No other schools in the Greencastle corporation have been locked down.

  • Does anyone have the details of this lock down? Greencastle Schools have not sent a notification out to parents.

  • This does not make sense. Lock down the Middle School, then blocks away on the north end, lock down TZ. What about the two schools in between? The H.S. is beside the middle school. Deer Meadow is within blocks of TZ. This article doesn't make sense to me. Why lock down the two that are farthest apart, but forget about the two that lie smack in the dab of the two that are locked down? I'm confused!!!

  • I'm a parent too -- I think the schools did a good job in getting the info. to the Banner & in turn the Banner getting it on the website. What more do you really need to know? The schools are on outside lock-down & they don't perceive imminent danger to the students. Period. It is precautionary & we were told we would be updated when more information became available.

  • whodouthinkur -- is it possible the family's children go to those two schools? Let the officials and law enforcement do their jobs as they see fit - that makes sense to me.

  • Still not notified by the school i wish they would let us know whats going on now instead of at 8 o'clock tonight. I want to know if my child is endanger now not later!

  • Finally at 1:40 information from the school. Not a good way to handle this. :(

  • There might be alot of counties who have problems but the county I live in has NO WHERE near the problems Putnam has.... No where near.... and not to the extent we seen in Putnam over the last few years... I would say it is on the down hill slide... too bad...

  • Just be glad someone is trying to protect your children.

  • Hmmmmmmm, why aren't these schools locked all the time?? You can't get in any doors in the South Put or North Put school districts at anytime when school is in session. I think it's time for the schools to be on permanent lock down and restrict access all the time. Sadly, you can't be too careful these days.

  • I agree kids first. It's just scary when your kids are away from you and you have know idea whats going on. The calls may have been slow but at least they already had the kids taken care of. I just wish I could have heard it from the school not second hand.

  • BG Reader, before everyone gets in a huff, I was actually very serious in my question. Curious. I was not sure how that all worked. You see I don't have kids in school anymore. Just asking a simple question, because I really didn't know. But you answered the question as professionally as you could I suppose. I am glad to know that they take every precaution also, however I was just wondering why all of them weren't locked down, for everyone's sake. Thanks, BG reader! You rock.

  • BG, not everyone reads the Banner Graphic online every minute, or every day for that matter. The best way to reach the parents is the automated phone system... And a little earlier notice would have been nice. As a parent, i am very concerned for my child, and the rest of the children of the school system.. I am sorry, but a simple we have it handled and no further info is not good enough for me. I hardly believe they have no further info, or they wouldn't have taken these steps. I want to know details, and don't appreciate being left in the dark.. As far as the school getting the info out to us.. I give them a "D".

  • Not everyone has a cell phone, but Banner Graphic has a text notification system - which sends out news bulletins. That's how I learned of today's lock-down at the school.

  • You all that are complaining about not being notified quickly enough need to understand the automated phone system. It is not set up to call 100 parents at a time. It is just like a person that would have to pick up the phone, dial, wait for an answer, release the info, hang up and dial the next number. It is a wonderful system but it does take time to go down the list.

I think the schools releasing it to the Banner was a good way to get the word out faster to some that may not have been called yet. I don't even live in Putnam Cty anymore but I received word when the story broke. I subscribe to the RSS feed for the newspaper as well as other media outlets; so as soon as the story was released it popped in my inbox.

I'm simply saying that a lot of you are critizing the auto call system but it works...it just takes time to call everyone. Maybe the BG should do a feature story on those systems to inform the public how they work exactly.

  • You know in this society you don't need or have the right to know all the details. I have a child in school in GC and am glad they locked the doors due to some type of issue. Nosey people in Putnam County are the problem. We need to know there was a problem and it was taken care of. Does it really matter that it was by phone or the BG or back in the day when they sent notes home. We don't need all the details all the time. Clearly the issue did not arise to a full out informational blitz. And by the way every school, county, town and state has Murders, thieves, Child Molesters and scumbags.

  • I agree completely with everything you said, hardtobelieve, well stated!

    -- Posted by BG-reader on Tue, Jan 26, 2010, at 11:26 AM
  • hardtobelieve, and bg, i am glad that it doesn't bother you if there are thieves, murderers, and child molesters in the area.. thats YOUR right.. As far as i am concerned we do have a right to know what is going on if it involves our children...

  • Brian01. Can you read? I stated that all areas have problems not just Greencastle/Putnam County. No one said we liked it or accepted it. What you have right to know the school reported. If you had an issue with your child or family that caused the school to feel the need to lock the doors would you like your personal issus aired out in the Banner and elsewhere. It was reported that there was a domestic issue that caused the school to lock doors at two of the schools. As a fairly bright person, that leads me to believe it is most likely a custody dispute. I don't need to know who has the problem, just that it has been dealt with. Maybe you should home school then you will have all the info you need right at your fingertips.

  • I think what you all fail to realize is the safety of your children is what was the concern of the schools. Its very apparent that they couldn't release any information to the public due to it being a domestic violence situation, releasing that kind of information could be very dangerous and lead to panic. Kudos to the schools stepping up to the plate and protecting the children. If they hadn't and then something had happened EVERYONE would be jumping up and down complaining how nothing was done. When they do something they get jumped on...com'on sometimes in life you just don't need to know all the details only that you're safe and everything is okay...knowing the details can make a situation worse...be greatful that this Shaun was willing to make the decision and take measures to protect the children. This family is already in turmoil and doesn't need anyone else pointing fingers at them....

  • If the school would have notified all the parents, I can just imagine the line of cars of parents wanting to pick up their child. I think Mr. Gobert handled it very well. I can't believe some of the comments here. Some people are so ready to jump on the schools for anything and every thing. I think Greencastle is a wonderful school system and we are lucky to have such caring administrators. It is just to bad that we have people who want to cause problems. If the students were really endangered, don't you think there would have been police cars every where? Give them a break and let the educate you kids.

  • Amen to the last two posts. More people with common sense.

  • hardtobelieve, yes i can read.. i read very well actually. Did i misinterpret what you said? yes, i'll be the first man to admit that I did. I apologize for that as stubbon headed as I am.. I am sorry. Thank you cillverfox for clarifying the situation a little.. I never wanted to know anything on the family or their personal life, but knowing a little more about what kind of situation, a little clarity.... was there a man trying to kidnap kids? another murderer on the loose? I am not knocking the automated service.. it is a wonderful service as far as getting information on closings and delays.. I just felt we were left in the dark for too long. They took action in the morning hours, but I was not notified til 2 pm. I got the explanation to that from THxGC. Thats all I was asking for .. Sorry if I rubbed anyone the wrong way. By the way, I graduated from Greencastle over 12 years ago.. I have worked in Indianapolis for 10 years or more.. I refuse to move there closer to my work and have no problem paying a little extra in gas, and my time so my daughter can goto this wonderful school system.., but there is nothing wrong with criticizing the bugs here and there.. my child is young and I myself am still in the learning process of the school system..
