Greencastle Council hears about upcoming events

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- A number of upcoming events came before the Greencastle Common Council at Tuesday's meeting, with the council giving its stamp of approval to several.

DePauw's College Republicans will be hosting the DePauw Dash at 10 a.m. on April 10. The 5K run-walk will help the club raise funds for the U.S. soldier it has "adopted."

Registration is $15 and anyone wanting more information may e-mail dpucollegerepublicans@gmail.com.

The city approved the requisite intersection closures for the event.

Cathryn Ensley came before the board on behalf of the Downtown Farmer's Market. This year's market will run Saturdays from June 5 through Oct. 15. With setup and teardown time, the weekly event will require the closure of Franklin Street on the north side of the courthouse square from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday.

The board approved the measure 4-0.

"(The market) is something our city is very, very proud of," board member Phyllis Rokicki said.

Chief's restaurant manager Indy New also came before the board to request a street closure for its second anniversary street fair on June 18. The event will feature live bands, food, drinks and a number of vendors.

The closure will be Jackson Street from Indiana Street to the alley behind Goodwill. The board approved the request.

There was further discussion of a possible beer garden in the street during the event, but the matter will come back before the board at a later date.

Tyler Archer came before the board on behalf of DePauw's Relay for Life committee. The Fluttering Duck is planning a fundraiser for Relay on the Walden Inn patio on April 2 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

For the event, they are requesting a noise variance, given that it will feature "conversational music" played at a low to medium level throughout.

The board granted the variance.

Archer also came before the board during public comments to help make the public and city more aware of this year's Relay for Life. The event will be from noon on April 24 to noon on April 25 at Blackstock Stadium.

Given the Bainbridge Fire Department's recent decision to discontinue its hazardous materials response, board member Adam Cohen asked Greencastle fire chief Bill Newgent how it would affect the coverage of the county.

Newgent said he did not foresee there being a problem, as Cloverdale and Greencastle can still provide the coverage for the entire county.

"I feel very confident in our teams. We do a lot of training together," Newgent said.

He added the city has means of getting payments for hazmat responses both in and out of the department's normal coverage area.

Council members approved the second reading of an amendment to the city's salary ordinance. This will not change anyone's salary, but simply transfers Tom Swenson from the engineering department to public works.

Finally, the council approved a resolution to become a friendship city with Quianjiang City, China. The idea came from the DePauw China Connection club.

While not any sort of formal agreement, being a friendship city simply establishes a relationship with the other city. It could open the door to possible student exchange programs and internships between the cities.

(Interesting that the audio on the local cable network broadcasting this meeting went silent during this discussion)
