GREENCASTLE -- State Rep. Nancy Michael (D-Greencastle) will host a March 31 breakfast meeting designed to give area small business owners a chance to discover the tools that state government can provide to help them survive and thrive during poor economic times.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. March 31 at the Area 30 Career Center, 1 N. Calbert Way.

"This event will feature presentations from officials representing the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) and the Small Business Centers of Indiana," Michael said.

"Both of these organizations offer a variety of programs and other tools that can benefit the owners of small businesses, and I wanted to give the parties on both sides of the equation a chance to get together and see how they can work together," the legislator continued.

Michael's event comes shortly after the close of the 2010 session of the Indiana General Assembly, where a series of initiatives designed to benefit small businesses were passed.

"Since small businesses employ 1.3 million Hoosiers, it makes sense to focus our efforts on providing them with additional programs that can help them expand their operations or convince them that Indiana offers the kind of positive business environment where they can thrive," Michael said.

Proposals passed this legislative session included a new employer tax credit, expansion of EDGE (Economic Development for a Growing Economy) credits to small businesses, and creation of an ombudsman position to help small businesses work more efficiently with state government.

"Many of these proposals will be coming on line soon, and I wanted to give area entrepreneurs a chance to see what is out there to help them if they decide to take a chance on starting their own businesses," Michael said.

The event will include a continental breakfast.

Those interested in attending Michael's meeting should R.S.V.P. the lawmaker before March 26 by calling her at 720-1974 or e-mailing her at nmichael04@yahoo.com.

  • Good for Nancy Micheals coming back and speaking with her district. I do not agree with most of her politics but give her respect for talking with people. That's more than we can say for our current US Congressman who is scared to speak with the people especially now because the lie is over about him being pro-life, fiscally conservative and pro- small federal government. Rep. Micheals, how does the state plan on helping out small business owners whose taxes are going to go through the roof thanks to the passage of the Socalist Health Care Bill of America Act?
