Eagles win Terre Haute South Tournament

TERRE HAUTE -- The South Putnam softball team continued to cruise early in the season as it captured the Terre Haute South Tournament over the weekend.

The Eagles (6-0) defeated Terre Haute North in the championship game 8-1 to come away with the title. Brooke Boetjer pitched a complete game five-hitter, with five strikeouts. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs.

Jenny Thompson scored two runs in the game, while Janet Crafton and Megan Barnes recorded two RBIs each.

The tournament began on Friday when South Putnam defeated Henderson County of Kentucky 5-0 to get things going. Boetjer once again pitched a complete game with three hits. She also recorded eight strikeouts. She also added a home run and scored twice.

Crafton was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

When play began on Saturday, the Eagles defeated the host Braves 8-2 and the downed Union Dugger 18-3 in the second game.

Against Terre Haute South, Krystal Welch was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scoring two times, while Mattie Varvel and Barnes had two RBIs each.

Boetjer pitched the complete game six-hitter, with nine strikeouts and no earned runs.

Kaylin Yon pitched the third game against Union Dugger and kept the Eagles' strong play going. She pitched six innings with six hits and three earned runs and two strikeouts. Varvel pitched one scoreless inning for the Eagles.

Welch was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, while Thompson scored four runs and Kelsey Whitaker scoring three. Crafton led the team with three RBIs.

South Putnam will host Cascade tonight at 5 p.m.
