Tiger Cubs earn second place at Edgewood

Monday, April 19, 2010

ELLETTSVILLE -- The Greencastle boys' golf team placed second at the Mustang Invitational at Edgewood Saturday with 323. The Tiger Cubs were bested by only Brownstown Central's 308. Brad Haussin and Jimmy Wheeler carded a pair of 78s to lead GHS.

"Overall, I'm happy with our progress this season," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler said. "Jim and Brad both felt upset about their 78s, but I felt like they managed the wind and their emotions well. I'm thrilled that they demand perfection out of themselves, but they also should be proud when they turn in a score that represents a good bit of scrambling and battling."

In addition to Haussin and Wheeler, Tyler Hopkins contributed a nice 82, Eric Embry an 85 and J.T. Hennette chipped in a 93 for Greencastle. Wheeler spoke about how impressed he's been with Hopkins so far this Season.

"Tyler's contribution has been fantastic. He's really come through for us every time. He's also turning into a good grinder. His 41 on the Ridge course was pivotal, today," Wheeler commented.

For most teams, the early part of the season is spent discovering what they need to work on to get where the coach believes they should be. For Wheeler, the early part of 2010 has been a bit of a surprise.

"Honestly, we're already better than I thought we would be. We have had some good surprises step and fill in the holes left by graduation," he said.

Greencastle will travel to Speedway with Lapel Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.
