Science Central

Central Elementary students spent a day in the world of science. As a class assignment, DePauw University students spent Thursday at Central conducting science experiments with fifth and sixth grade classes. Jonah Stevens, left, and Joey Masters, both in sixth grade, test chemical reactions in test tubes during "Harry Potter's Potion Lab." The DePauw class put together six different science experiments for Chemistry 130 taught by instructors Jon Stack and Hilary Eppley. Below, kindergarten student Eddie Curran, right, and substitute teacher Elizabeth Willhoite are surprised by the bubble reaction from mixing vinegar and baking soda -- a science experiment conducted by DePauw University and Greencastle High School student volunteers. It was part of a science outreach program through which science takes shape through experiments. About 70 volunteers spent the day Thursday with kindergarten through fourth grade classes conducting science experiments about magnets, ways to block the sun, chemical reactions and various aspects of science. Dave Roberts, Sharon Crary and Central Elementary instructional assistant Beth Arnold organized the initiative.

  • Wow! I am a parent at Central and I cannot tell you how thankful I am to DePauw for this science out reach program! Really, not only does it reach out and enrich the elementary population, but it also encourages our high school students to learn from the DePauw students. The kiddies were so excited when they came home from school, and now, they want to do more experiments at home. Thank you DePauw for giving them the excitement of science!
