Cloverdale blanks Cougars in Classic

Monday, May 17, 2010

Game two of the Putnam County Classic baseball tournament saw Cloverdale rise to the challenge of North Putnam and win 4-0.

North Putnam threatened in the first, but could not advance Shawn Diebold past third base. Cloverdale nearly scored themselves, but a well turned double play by the Cougar defense stymied the offensive threat.

Cloverdale would score two in the third on two passed balls. They added two more in the fifth after Jordan Brinkman led off with a triple. Brian dale flew out to left field to score Brinkman. Jeff Dale singled and William Whitinger came in to pinch-run. He would score on a Josh Burdette single later in the inning.

Clover pitcher Kyle Martin limited the Cougars to three hits in the contest, while striking out ten. He did not allow more than five batters in any inning, a performance that won praise from Clover coach Bryan Archer.

"We had a good week of practice and came into today focused," Archer said. "Kyle Martin threw great today. He threw strikes, got ahead in the count and our defense behind him played well. It was a total team effort."

"Kyle was amazing today. We got hits, made plays, it was a complete performance to be a good North Putnam team. Beating them is always a challenge for us."
