The Towers at 701 E. Seminary St. played an important role in the social life of Putnam County for many years. It was also the home for DePauw University presidents prior to the Elms. From mansions to bungalows, there is an eclectic mix of historic homes in the Eastern Enlargement area of Greencastle. Many of these homes will be featured on a self-guided walking tour of the area sponsored by the Heritage Preservation Society and Indiana Landmarks in honor of National Preservation Month on May 22.

GREENCASTLE -- On May 22, people interested in historic architecture will have a perfect opportunity to explore over 70 old homes in Greencastle.

In honor of National Preservation Month, the Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County (HPSPC) and Indiana Landmarks are offering a free presentation and self-guided walking tour of a sampling of homes in the historic Eastern Enlargement District of Greencastle.

The presentation of historic architecture on Putnam County homes will be available at the Putnam County Library in the Kiwanis Room from 11 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 2 p.m.

From craftsmen style homes to a bungalow built for slaves and hired help to Italianate mansions, participants in this tour will see them all.

Color brochures with a map of the homes that are mostly situated on Seminary and Washington streets will be available at the library and the Putnam County Museum. Brochures will be available at the library the day of the event until 4 p.m.

A workshop on rehabbing historic wooden windows, offering hands-on experience, will also be available on May 22 at the Putnam County Museum from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Patchin and Rhonda Deeg of Ol' House Experts will lead the presentation. There is a $10 fee for the windows workshop.
