Sectional softball action kicks off today for teams

Monday, May 24, 2010

The 2010 girls' softball sectionals kick off today around the state, with one local team on the first slate of games.

The Cloverdale Clovers will go against Cascade today at 7 p.m. in the Tri-West Softball Sectional. Back on April 26 and 27, the Clovers faced the Cadets, dropping both contests.

The Clovers were able to bounce back after losing the first game 6-0 and show some muscle against Cascade, falling by two, 11-9.

Also playing in the Tri-West Sectional are a couple of hot county teams.

North Putnam will do battle with Monrovia to begin Tuesday's action, with the Class 2A No. 3 ranked South Putnam Eagles playing the host Bruins in the late game.

Recently, the Cougars and Bulldogs tangled, with North Putnam coming out on top in both contests. In the first game they won 4-3 and they took the second contest 4-0.

The Eagles were able to score a narrow 3-0 win over the Bruins back on April 28. South Putnam owns a 21-1 overall record and has the best record entering the Tri-West tournament.

The second game of the bottom bracket could prove to be an intesting one.

If the Cougars and Eagles get past their opening round opponents, they will face each other on Wednesday.

The pair faced each other on April 16 and 17, with the Eagles coming out on top in both contests, as well as the Putnam County Championship game on may 15.

Our local 2A teams will not be the only ones battling for a spot in the secitonal final. Also playing Tuesday will be Greencastle at the West Vigo Softball Sectional in the second game of the night.

GHS will play Edgewood, an opponent they faced on April 8 and lost 11-1 to. The Mustangs are also the only team to have defeated county rival South Putnam this season.

Host West Vigo drew the bye and will face the winner of South Vermillion and Brown County Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Both sectional championships will take place Thursday at 6 p.m.
