Motorist strikes child on bicycle

GREENCASTLE -- A Greencastle boy is believed to have escaped serious injury after being struck by a car late Monday afternoon.

A report from the Greencastle Police Department said Glenn K. Hollis, 33, was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Bloomington Street just after 4 p.m. when a 14-year-old male riding his bicycle eastbound on Anderson Street rode into Hollis' path.

The child struck Hollis' vehicle on the front driver's side fender. The child was thrown from his bicycle, and struck his head on the windshield, the report said. The child then fell to the ground.

The boy was taken via ambulance to the Putnam County Hospital to be treated for a head injury, the report said.

Greencastle Police Department Chief Tom Sutherlin said he believed the boy's injuries were fairly minor.

"It was my understanding that (the child) was kept in the hospital overnight for observation," Sutherlin said Tuesday. "I'm not aware that he was sent anywhere further than Putnam County Hospital."

Sutherlin said Hollis was not cited for the accident.
