Evelyn Doris McDermit

Evelyn Doris McDermit, 83, of Elwood died July 15, 2010 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood after a brief illness.

She was born on July 5, 1927 in Kirklin.

She married Harold B. McDermit on July 5, 1947. She worked at Eli Lily for two years before getting married and was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a 1945 graduate of Kirklin High School.

She was a member of the Shiloh Friends Church in rural Madison County. She was a member of the Farm Bureau, Madison County Pork Producers and Indiana Duroc Association. She was an avid supporter of the 4-H program for 52 years. She was a Pee Wee sponsor and helped with the PTO. She taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She is survived by six children, George C. (Donna) McDermit of Greencastle, Harold B. (Patti) McDermit II of Lapel, Mark C. (Natasha) McDermit of Elwood, Christina A. (Dale) Griffin of Cutler; Linda D. McDermit of Elwood and Marla J. McDermit and fiancé Rick Dever of Elwood; 14 grandchildren, Heather (Robert) Brewster; Lauren (Chris) Beatrice, George McDermit and fiancé Kayla, Stacy (Nathan) Wainscott, Beth McDermit, Darlene (Greg) Hatfield, Christy Wehrli, Michael McDermit, Brian Griffin, Sarah Griffin, Jill Griffin, Chad Griffin, Katie McDermit, and Sam McDermit; three step-granddaughters, Brandi Boram, Kristina Walls, Alicia Sprague; and six great-grandchildren, Brianna Hatfield, Caleb Hatfield, Karina Brewster, Claire Brewster, Gabe Wehrli and Madison Wainscott.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Floyd and Bertha A. (Ziebarth) McClain; husband Harold B. McDermit, who died April 16; son Donald Lee McDermit, who died on Nov. 25, 1995; two brothers, H. Donald McClain and John McClain; and sister Helen Gunyon.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with the Rev. Gary Simmons of the Shiloh Friends Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Forrestville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
