This queen-size, beautifully tacked, multi-colored, crazy quilt is up for raffle to benefit Putnam County Hospital's Cancer Center. It was donated anonymously and will be raffled off along with other prizes, such as a handcrafted wooden sitting bench, two sides of freezer pork and a pop-up yard awning. Tickets are available until Aug. 27 for $1 each at the hospital's gift shop or the Greencastle and Cloverdale branches of First National Bank, Old National Bank and Teacher's Credit Union. In addition, there is an Indianapolis Colts lap quilt being raffled off at the Lincoln Park Speedway. Tickets for that blanket are available at the track's concession stand for $1 each.

GREENCASTLE -- In May 2009, a talented anonymous donor provided a queen-size quilt to raffle off and benefit Putnam County Hospital's Cancer Center. This year, another beautiful tacked, multi-colored, crazy quilt has been donated along with a handcrafted wooden sitting bench, two sides of freezer pork and a pop-up yard awning.

"It's wonderful to have area residents who want to contribute to the success of our local cancer center," said Linda Mann, RN, OCN cancer center manager.

Two years ago, PCH's Cancer Center was awarded a three-year matching grant through the Putnam County Community Foundation. For each dollar raised, the foundation will match up to $12,500 annually during the three-year period.

The staff continually looks for opportunities to assist in building the endowment, as well as sharing information on cancer prevention and services available locally.

"Individuals are often surprised to learn they can receive cancer treatments locally, saving time and money," Mann said. "We have three of the best oncologists in the state at our facility every week."

Tickets for the quilt raffle are $1 each or six for $5 and are available in the hospital's gift shop and at the cancer center. Tickets are also available at Greencastle and Cloverdale branches of First National Bank, Old National Bank and Teacher's Credit Union. Ticket sales conclude Aug. 27 with the drawing at 9 a.m. Aug. 30.

Additionally, chances are currently being sold at the new Lincoln Park Speedway, located on US 40 in Putnamville, for an Indianapolis Colts lap quilt. Those tickets can be purchased at the track concession stand for $1 each. The drawing will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 28.

"We are very fortunate to have support from the foundation," Mann said. "The cancer center endowment helps to guarantee the future operation of our facility."

All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Putnam County Community Foundation Cancer Center Endowment Matching Fund.

The cancer center is located inside PCH on the second floor and provides physician consults and chemotherapy treatments for oncology patients. The cancer center also holds monthly support groups at 5 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer is welcome to attend the group meetings.

The cancer center successfully completed the Commission on Cancer-Accredited Cancer Program process in June. The center has been in operation for the past 25 years.

Private donations to the cancer center can also be made at any time by contacting the community foundation at 653-4978.
