United Way Golf Scramble starts Aug. 6

GREENCASTLE -- The 30th annual United Way golf scramble is slated for Aug. 6 at Old Hickory Golf Course.

"This is the largest fundraiser for the United Way of Putnam County," said its director David English.

Teams along with hole and event sponsors are still being sought, English noted. "We need a 19th hole sponsor and a sponsor for the snack and beverage cart on the course."

The four-person scramble promises to have enviable door prizes, including a night at the Inn at DePauw with a complimentary dinner and breakfast; St. Louis Cardinals tickets with a private tour and tasting at Schlafly Brewery; a gift from Mason's Jewelers; and a Dixie Chopper hotel and conference center package, just to name a few.

Last year, the United Way exceeded its campaign goal. This year, it was about 10 percent short of making the $175,000 goal, which meant funding cuts for United Way partner agencies.

"The allocation committee made two exceptions," English said. "It took time to really look at the impact on the community because of the necessary cuts."

In addition to the scramble, the United Way will hold a charity raffle with a prize of a trip for two the Cayman Islands. Airfare for two and a weeklong stay in a condo on the beach are included.

"We hope to raise money for the community impact projects," English said. "The funds raised will stay in the community, to impact the community."

Tickets for the charity raffle are $5 each and will be sold at the United Way booth during the fair and at the United Way office, located at 2 S. Jackson St. The drawing will be held at the annual dinner and meeting, slated for March next year.

"These fundraisers will help alleviate staff and program cuts in the community," said English.

Anyone interested in entering the golf scramble or to become a sponsor, contact the United Way at 653-5638. Cost to enter the scramble is $55 per person or $220 per team.

Registration for the golf scramble will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon with lunch served from 11 a.m. to noon. Tee time will be at noon with a 19th hole party and awarding of prizes at 5 p.m.

"This is the United Way of Putnam County and we can only be as strong as the community wants us to be," English said.
