Danville wins Clover Invitational by 53 strokes
CLOVERDALE -- A day after blistering conditions and rain, local golfers found almost ideal conditions greeting them for Thursday's Cloverdale Invitational.
For the second straight year, Danville walked away with the team win, posting a score of 366. They also had the medalist of the round in Kendra Lucky, who shot an 87.
As for county schools, South Putnam was the top finisher with a fourth-place finish with a score of 435, while North Putnam was seventh with a score of 523. The host Clovers fielded an incomplete team.
A light breeze caressed the course at Clover Meadows, but with the season just underway, it was clear there was still some work to be done.
Cloverdale saw sophomore Sydney Shrum post a score of 96, which was good enough for fifth overall on the day. Her back nine round of 42 was impressive in spite of her carding a nine on hole No. 13. She also had a birdie on hole No. 15.
"Sydney knocked about eight strokes off her score from Tuesday on probably a tougher course, I don't know if it is or not, but probably is. She had a couple unfortunate things happen to her out there," CHS head coach Ken Williams said.
Makayla Moore, a freshman, dropped her score from earlier in the week and Williams is expecting that type of improvement.
"Makayla improved by about 25 strokes. She's a beginner, so she's going to improve by big strides, early anyway we hope so," Williams said.
Cloverdale No. 1 Victoria Boyette is still trying to straighten out her game in this young season. She posted a 109, which is an improvement over Tuesday, yet Williams indicated his junior needs to work on her shot a little.
"Victoria shot a 109 -- about 10 strokes better than Tuesday. She's got a ways to go yet. She's not hitting the ball straight and not getting through it the way we would like her to, but it was better than Tuesday," Williams commented.
Looking at his team's two matches so far, Williams liked the turnaround he saw on Thursday and hopes it continues as the season progresses.
"This was an improvement over Tuesday," he said. "We weren't very good Tuesday for sure and we're not terribly good right now, but we've improved in some areas. We had to deal with some adverse conditions out there and handled a little bit better than we did Tuesday.
"One of our biggest problems Tuesday was we'd have an adverse condition and it would just trash the rest of the day," he continued. "So, we recovered on a couple bad deals out there, which is a learning experience and the kids have to learn that and we did to a degree."
For the Eagles, Cassie Warren led the charge with a 105, followed closely by Kelsey Searles with a 109 and Caitlyn Boyce with a 110. Cierra Perry posted a score of 111 and Madison Cash shot a 122.
Ellen Wilborn led North Putnam after shooting a 123. Emmy Rees was second with a 131, Josie Parent followed with a 133 and Carlie Shearer was close behind with a 136. Meagan Schatter rounded out the Cougar golfers with a 152.
