Garage sale raises money for local cancer patients

GREENCASTLE -- Bargain hunting and supporting local cancer patients can go hand in hand this Saturday, as the Granny Ride will sponsor a garage sale to raise funds for the cause.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot beside the Eagles Lodge, on Elizabeth Street in Greencastle.

Since 2001, the Granny Ride, an annual motorcycle ride named for the late Judy "Granny" Rubeck, has been raising money for local residents with cancer. During Rubeck's fight with cancer, they found it was hard to get financial help for adults fighting the disease.

The funds from the Granny Ride have gone to help patients with expenses such as travel to and from treatments and wheelchair ramps.

The group is also planning this year's Granny Ride for Sept. 18. Riders will leave the Greencastle Moose Lodge between 11:30 a.m. and noon to enjoy a five-hour ride before returning to the Moose for a night of dinner, music and fun.

Cost is $10 per person or $15 for a couple. Dinner is $5.

The goal of the ride each year is to raise at least $1,000 to split among as many patients as possible.

"The more money we make, the more we can give to other people," said Mary Rader, one of the event's organizers.
