Online registration hugely successful for South Putnam

GREENCASTLE -- Online registration at South Putnam Community Schools seems to have been a rousing success.

This was the first year the service was offered, and at the South Putnam Community School Board Corporation meeting Monday night, technology director Steve Ricketts offered a report.

Ricketts said 40 percent of students had been registered before the official registration day, and several hundred were registered during the Putnam County 4-H Fair.

With doing the online registration, parents can check students' grades online as well as pay students' lunch money.

Also, new smart boards and Promethean boards have been purchased for the elementary schools and the junior and senior high schools.

A new product, Novell Storage Manager, has been made available system-wide and makes it possible for teachers and students to share information in a virtual format.

In personnel issues, it was reported that bus driver Steve Hunter and Carol Carter, a part-time custodian at Reelsville Elementary School, had turned in their resignations. Additionally, effective at the end of the 2014-15 school year, elementary teacher Narda Cotton from Fillmore will retire.

New hires for the school system were bus driver Mark Carr, Marilyn Cooper as a part-time cafeteria worker at Fillmore and Angie Wyatt as a part-time custodian for Reelsville.

The board also approved the Future Farmers of America trip to the National Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 19-22. Two individuals will be competing in a national contest and also going on the FFA trip Oct. 28-30 to the national horse convention in Tulsa, Okla.

Dave Davies, agricultural teacher and the junior-senior high school FFA sponsor gave a brief description of what is going on with the agricultural program.

There are 119 students in the program and they have been busy cleaning out the fish tanks to get them set up for breeding. Davies is also in the process of updating the technology in the lab, as well as reestablishing the hydroponics section of the lab and starting aeroponics and vermiculture lab and starting to raise shrimp. Davies also wants to starting using the aquaculture trailer at fairs and conventions.

  • Finally South Putnam's FFA is actually doing something.

  • The Ag program should have been the headline. The online registration is only a partial solution and definitely did not go as smoothly as presented here. There does seem to be a lot of energy on the FFA side, though.
