Balanced Eagle golfers pick up win over CHS

BRAZIL -- South Putnam's girls golf team had balanced scoring for a 209-stroke total Monday at Oak Ridge Golf Course in a victory over Cloverdale, which posted an incomplete for having only three players.

Even if Cloverdale had been able to field the four players necessary for the team score, the Clovers likely wouldn't have won. Cloverdale's three-player total of 180 would have meant the fourth player needed to shoot a 7-under par 28 to overcome South Putnam's solid scoring.

Cierra Perry shot 48, Kelsey Searles 50, Caitlin Boyce 55 and Robbi Urton 56-- an average of 52.5 -- for the Eagles. South Putnam also showed good depth with Madison Cash's 58 and Cassie Warren's 60.

Cloverdale's Sydney Shrum took medalist honors with a 44. Victoria Boyette struggled to a 62 and Makayla Moore had 73.

Shrum, a sophomore, began playing competitive golf when she joined the Clovers at the start of last season. She had played very little golf of any kind before then. Shrum had two pars, on the 280-yard par four 10th hole and the 95-yard par three 13th, but also had three triple bogeys.

"Sydney had a pretty good day," Cloverdale coach Ken Williams said. "Sydney and Victoria (Boyette) have both been playing pretty good, but Victoria had a tough day today. We're looking for both to improve in the coming weeks."

Cloverdale hasn't fielded a four-player team this season.

"We're 0-for-2010," Williams said. "We've had a very frustrating year."

Williams expects to have at least a four-player team by next week. One girl was away on a family vacation and another girl has recently decided to join the program.

South Putnam coach Debbie Steffy wasn't able to attend Monday's match because of other school commitments. Volunteer assistant Jill Newton stepped in to replace Steffy.

"It looks like our scores were a little higher than usual," Newton said. "We need to work on putting and our short game."
