Saturday Shoes set to rock Parkfest
GREENCASTLE -- Parkfest returns again Tuesday night with a set from local alt-country favorite Saturday Shoes. The set runs from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Robe-Ann Park bandshell.
"We still rock the best alt-country sets in the county," guitarist and lead singer Rick Barcus said. "We're down to a trio again, as Anthony Mullis takes a break to finish some solo music projects with his original material. We hope to see him in the lineup again soon, but understand that one's creative muse doesn't work on a schedule."
Barcus, Dennis Furr (bass) and Jeremy Hayes (drums) remain in the fold, playing their traditional fare, including songs originally by the likes of Ryan Adams and the Drive-By Truckers, while expanding the repertoire.
"We've been trying to put together updated set lists and add new songs, while at the same time dredging up some songs that we haven't played for a while," Barcus said. "It was interesting going back to a power trio, because it forced us to get back to basics, and I think that's a good thing now and then because it reminds me of when we first got together to play, which was almost three years ago."
Tuesday's set should also include some classic rock numbers, although the band is making sure to avoid mainstream "hits." Instead, they have dug for some deeper album cuts.
"We wanted to cover more Rolling Stones, a band we love, so we sidestepped such safe bets as 'Honytonk Women' or 'Dead Flowers' and looked for something that doesn't get a lot of play anymore, like 'Shine a Light,'" Barcus said.
The band's bread and butter, though, remains alt-country (or Americana or country rock), so fans of the band need not be discouraged.
"We hope to see a lot of familiar faces at the park on Tuesday night, and hopefully a lot of new ones as well," Barcus said.
Tuesday will also mark the final time this summer the Tuesday evening farmers' market accompanies Parkfest. Vendors will be on hand in the park from 5 to 8 p.m.
