PCPL encourages patrons to join during Library Card Sign-up

GREENCASTLE -- September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Putnam County Public Library wants to make sure that all children in Putnam County have the smartest card of all -- a library card.

Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers.

However, library cards aren't just for children.

The public library is a community hub of activity. In tough economic times, a library card gives individuals free access to books and computers, homework databases, assistance with resumes and job searches, accurate financial information, magazines, CDs, DVDs and much more.

Activities during Library Card Sign-up Month include a visit from the Humane Society of Putnam County with their "mobile pets." Potential adopters of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens can visit the library on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and see the variety of animals available for adoption.

Anyone who obtains a new library card during the month of September will receive a 15 percent discount off the adoption fee.

Sign up for a new library card and you will also receive a coupon to be used to select a free book of your choice from the Friends of the Library book sale room located on the lower level of the library.

The Blue Door Café at 302 E. Washington Street, Greencastle, also will offer coupons and discounts to library cardholders. Sign up for a new card and you will receive a coupon good for a small drink of your choice from the Blue Door.

Existing library cardholders can show their card at the Blue Door and get 10 percent off their total purchase during the month of September.

Getting a library card is easy. Simply provide proof of residence with current address in Putnam County and your card is free. Children under the age of 18 years of age must have the signature of a parent or guardian, with the exception of college students.
