Tiger Cubs fall to Chargers 3-2

GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle boys' tennis team on Thursday dropped all three singles matches in a 3-2 loss to North Montgomery.

With No. 1 singles player Kenneth Buchanan out for the match, coach Bart Spencer was forced to alter his lineup. The results were lopsided losses for each of his singles players. The Tiger Cubs won one game combined in all three singles matches.

"We were having everybody play out of position tonight, and it's tough to win like that," Spencer said. "I give those guys a lot of credit though. They may not have won a lot of games in their matches, but they were still winning a lot of points within those games. Those don't show up, but they played tough."

Greencastle's Landon Miller fell 6-0, 6-1 in the No.1 match up, while Joey Kass and Cy Spencer both were shut out 6-0, 6-0 in the No 2. and No. 3 slots, respectively.

The Greencastle doubles squads were the bright spots of the night, with both teams notching comfortable victories. Lee Hayes and Kaden Faust won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 team won 6-2, 6-2.

"Lee and Kaden did a great job hitting the right shots and keeping the ball in play, and just letting the other team beat themselves," Spencer said. "It's a good win for them."

Senior Joey Kass, playing in the No. 2 singles slot, struggled in the loss tonight (Thursday), but said he made sure to play hard until the very end.

"I may not have been doing that well, but I was going to play hard to the last point," Kass said.

Keeping a level head and playing disciplined tennis throughout a match is something Spencer emphasizes -- and he thinks he saw some of that, even in a losing effort.

"Our guys -- really, anyone in the game of tennis -- have to stay cool, stay confident and keep their heads," the coach said. "Really, the person who wins is usually the guy who keeps their head."
