Signing On for Seat Safety
GREENCASTLE -- In 2008, among children under age 5 in passenger vehicles, an estimated 244 lives were saved by child restraint use.
It is this statistic, among others, why Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray signed a proclamation Tuesday declaring Saturday, Sept. 25 as Seat Check Saturday in conjunction with Child Passenger Safety Week Sept. 19 through 25.
In honor of the week, the Greencastle Police Department will hold a Child Car Safety Seat Check Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 25 at the Putnam County Hospital. The event will be held thanks to the sponsorship of State Farm Insurance agents Therese Cunningham and Brad Tucker and through a grant from Automotive Safety. For more information about the event, call 653-2925.
According to a study by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, "children ages 4 to 7 who use booster seats are 45 percent less likely to be injured in car crashes than children who are restrained only by seat belts."
