Cloverdale's water plants lack smoke detectors, for now

CLOVERDALE -- At a meeting of the Cloverdale utility board, interim utility manager Rich Saucerman said the water treatment plant and the wastewater plant do not currently have smoke detectors.

Saucerman told the board he intended to purchase smoke detectors for those buildings, as well as additional smoke detectors for the town hall building.

"In the wastewater plant and the water plant, there's no smoke detectors over there," Saucerman said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Saucerman said the detectors were ordered but not installed.

"This is Fire Prevention Month, too," Cloverdale town council president Cathy Tipton said.

Saucerman said he also intended to replace or install emergency lighting in all three buildings.

"This is something we need to get solved right away and keep up on," said board vice-president Don Sublett, referring to both the smoke detectors and emergency lighting.

Tipton suggested Saucerman buy 15 smoke detectors. Saucerman said each detector costs around $20. The detectors and emergency lighting were presented as part of an overall safety items report.

The board approved an adjustment for Carla Alcorn's sewer and water bill. A plastic fitting leading into her home's water pipe fractured and leaked water. The leak occurred around Aug. 10 and resulted in a $473 bill. The board said the new bill would be averaged from her previous three sewer and water bills.

The board also approved spending $22,000 on road improvement projects at Stardust Way, Robert Weist Ave. and Market St.

"I wish we could do more, but we don't have the money," Sublett said.
