PUTNAM COUNTY -- A 47-year-old Clay County woman was flown via Air Evac to Wishard Hospital, Indianapolis, following a two-vehicle accident at the Clay-Putnam County line on United States 40 Thursday morning.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., officials were dispatched to the area. Both vehicles were traveling westbound at the time.

According to information provided by Indiana State Police Trooper Shilo Raulston, the woman, driving a 1999 Chrysler Sebring, allegedly attempted to pass another vehicle and did not notice a semi-truck attempting to make a left turn.

"She was passing another car on the right and couldn't stop in time," Raulston said. "She didn't see it."

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the vehicle had slammed into the back end of the semi-truck.

"The car looked pretty bad," Raulston said. "But she was talking. She was alert. She was a little confused, but she was breathing."

A tow truck had to be used to lift the back end of the semi-truck off the vehicle and the woman had to be extricated from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life.

The drivers of both vehicles have not been identified.

All traffic on U.S. 40 was stalled following the accident.

Other agencies responding to the accident included the Clay County Sheriff's Department, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Greencastle Fire Department, the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department, TransCare, Clay County Search and Rescue, Putnam County Operation Life, and Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department
