GREENCASTLE -- Rebecka Howard loves running -- and in an effort to share the joy she takes from it with others, she is heading up the coordination of a Halloween Fun Run.

The inaugural event, a non-timed, 5K run-walk, is set for Oct. 30. It will take place at Robe-Ann Park in Greencastle, and will begin at Shelter No. 5 at 9 a.m.

There is no charge to participate.

"The purpose of this event is to get the community together for fun, health and fitness," Howard said.

For the past several years, Howard has been running with groups of friends.

"This whole thing just started out to be a bunch of us jogging around town," she said.

When she began mulling the idea of putting the Fun Run together, Howard sought the assistance of the Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department.

"They've been great to work with," she said.

Howard has been in contact with local schools, hoping to get students interested in the event.

"I really want kids involved," she said.

The route for the Fun Run is 3.1 miles long. It begins at Robe-Ann Park, winds around DePauw University and comes back to the park.

"I am hoping to bring the community together and to spread the message of the importance of physical activity in a fun way," Howard said.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, but running shoes will be required. Outfits must me family-appropriate and safe (no long, hanging or loose material that could present tripping hazards).

Runners and walkers of all ages, as well as pets and strollers, are welcome. All participants must sign a waiver releasing the City of Greencastle from any responsibility for any injuries.

Howard is still looking for donations of prizes, bottled water and snacks for race participants. Suggested prizes are gift cards, coupons or fall and Halloween-themed items.

"Any items would be greatly appreciated," she said.
