Manslaughter suspect's case transferred

GREENCASTLE -- The case of a Cloverdale man accused of gunning down a Martinsville man this past August has been transferred from one Putnam County court to another.

Jared T. Robbins, 22, is charged with Class A felony voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Donald E. Lowe III, 28.

The shooting occurred in Cloverdale. Robbins allegedly shot Lowe in the chest outside a residence between the hours of 11 p.m. on Aug. 21 and midnight on Aug. 22.

Lowe was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case was originally filed in Putnam County Circuit Court. Because the public defender in the case, Scott Adams, is employed through Putnam County Superior Court, the case was transferred there.

A pretrial conference in the case was set for Oct. 14, but that date was taken off the calendar when it was transferred. Superior Court Judge Denny Bridges has yet to set any court dates for Robbins.

Robbins has been in jail since his arrest immediately following the shooting. His bond was set at $100,000 cash only.

Voluntary manslaughter is similar to second-degree murder; it is defined as an intentional killing for which there was no premeditation.

An eyewitness to the shooting told police Robbins fired five to seven rounds at Lowe with a handgun, and believed at least two of them struck Lowe.

Robbins fled the scene in a car, the witness said. Within an hour of the shooting, police found and apprehended Robbins.

Robbins had just been released from prison in July. He was convicted in Putnam County Circuit Court in March 2009 on a Class B felony burglary charge and was given a 2 1/2-year sentence. In January, he was sentenced in Marion County to one-year concurrent sentences for felony criminal recklessness and intimidation.

  • I believe Indiana has the death penalty. No need to be fiscally irresponsible by paying good tax money to keep a menace to society fed, sheltered, and entertained for the rest of his natural life. He made the decision to take a life and he needs to face the consequences. Leniency in sentencing him has been proven ineffective. He has a record already and I believe in most cases it only takes three strikes to be out. Posessing a gun shows a bit of premeditation to me. There are laws regarding felons being in posession of firearms. It seems felons do not obey gun registration/ownership laws or probation regulations any better than they obey laws regarding burglary, criminal recklessness, intimidation, murder, etc. Now that I mention it, I can see the escalated behavior pattern in his criminal activities. Could it be more obvious that he will keep up the criminal activities if leniency and freedom are once again permitted in his sentencing! Hmmmm.

  • Jared is not a terrible person, he just let his anger get the best of him, I'm not excusing him from taking a life, but what you need to think about is the same as what he should have been thinking about when he shot Donnie, death not only takes that person away from you, but it also takes them away from there dads, brothers, sisters, and family in general. There is no reason why he should be given the death penalty, he made his mistake and will serve time for it, that's good enough reassurance for me, & if it isn't for you then maybe you need some time to consider the circumstances of the crime he committed.

  • Putnam county needs to do something....This guy has been in Putnam county jail way to long.I'm Donnie's aunt and would love to see this guy go to prison.Donnie knew a lot of people in there that will love to meet Jared.I wish that he would never got into the brother Hood but I know they believe an eye for an eye. And that is one of the thing keeping me going...Donnie was a lot of things but never a killer.
