Joseph and his Dreamcoat hit GHS stage

GREENCASTLE -- Greencastle High School will present Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Parker Auditorium in McAnally Center on the GHS campus.

Based upon the story of Jacob and his 12 sons found in the book of Genesis in the Bible, the cast is composed of more than 120 students ranging in age from 6 years old to 18.

Jacob (played by Dalton Guyer) favors his son Joseph (played by Kenny Buchanan) so much that he buys him a beautiful, multi-colored coat. This infuriates Joseph's brothers (played by Seth Miller, Aaron Hunter, AJ Gerard, Cy Spencer, Alex Asbell, Joe Lenihan, Ethan Gill, Cody Sheldon, Adam Jayne, Steven Turner and Riley Jayne), so they sell Joseph to a band of Ishmaelites. Eventually, Joseph winds up in jail but is saved by the Pharoah (played by Walter Chiarella) in Egypt when Joseph is able to interpret the Pharoah's dream.

Other students playing major roles in this fast-paced, no dialogue musical are sophomore Alex Asbell as both Potiphar and brother Gad and Kaila Thurston, Olivia Humphries and Brookelyn Edgar as the narrators. GHS junior Katie Hedge choreographed the show.

Musical styles range from French to reggae to rap, country and disco.

"At a time when our public schools are under attack by our state government, it is my pleasure to show our community that the performing arts are alive and well in Greencastle's public schools," GHS theatre director Bethany Bax said. "We appreciate the support."

Kenny Buchanan, who plays the title role, said cast and crew members have been working together since the end of August, which has brought them closer together.

"We've gotten to know each other very well, which is great because the characters are so complex," he said. "We fit into those roles and fit together as a cast very easily."

Tickets are available this week during regular school hours from the GHS bookstore at the price of $6 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets will also be available at the door each show night beginning at 7 p.m.
