North Putnam Family Healthcare to offer free health screenings

Thursday, November 4, 2010

The North Putnam Family Healthcare office will be offering free health screens every business day in November.

Dr. Elizabeth Brater, Windy Watt, FNP and staff will be conducting the screens.

The office is located in Bainbridge.

"This is a quick, easy way for patients to get a check-up," said Watt.

The screens will be offered during normal business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every business day in November.

The health screen includes a blood glucose check, blood pressure reading, waist circumference measurement and height, weight and body mass index calculations.

The screen takes approximately 10 minutes.

No appointment is required.

Individuals wishing to participate are encouraged to stop by the office any business day.

The screens are being offered as a part of World Diabetes Day, which is observed every Nov. 14.

"Diabetes is a worldwide disease. It is estimated that nearly 248 million people are living with diabetes," said Brater. "Knowing your risk factors can help to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes."

Putnam County Hospital offers diabetes education classes for area residents living with diabetes.

The classes, "What is Diabetes?" and "Nutrition Education", are offered in two three-hour blocks every month for a fee of $25 for both classes and are held on the third floor of the hospital.

Participants can save $5 by registering in advance by calling 765-658-2760. A physician's referral is not needed.

Classes will be held on Nov. 4 and 11 and Dec. 2 and 9.

Brater and Watt are currently accepting new patients.
