GREENCASTLE -- The next Sustainable Greencastle meeting will feature "Green Entrepreneur of the Year" Brandon Pitcher on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in City Hall. Pitcher, of 5 Kingdoms Development, will present, "What can a mushroom do to prepare me for the 21st Century?"

Pitcher has been a leading change agent in Indiana for nearly a decade and was commended earlier in 2010 with the Indiana Green Business Awards "Green Entrepreneur of the Year" as well as being recognized by Sen. Richard Lugar's office as an "Energy Patriot" for his dedication to social entrepreneurship and sustainability education over the past decade.

His passion for change management and sustainability started at an early age, having given his first lecture on sustainability at Purdue University (a school he did not attend) when he was 20 years old. He has given over 300 presentations across Indiana, throughout the U.S., and internationally.

He has presented at MIT, the United Nations University in Tokyo and many other prominent venues on his work in Indiana, sustainability and zero emissions efforts. He is currently working with a variety of organizations from businesses to civil society throughout the Midwest educating their stakeholders for the opportunities within the current economic transition.

Pitcher is also a certified Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives (ZERI) Systems Designer with over 8 years of diverse global experience in sustainability outreach and education, zero emissions and waste consulting, and sustainable redevelopment. Recognizing the importance of education, he is an adamant and passionate advocate for exposing all to the opportunities ahead within sustainability.

Pitcher has studied extensively the best practices around the globe for over a decade now visiting nearly 40 countries. He has visited and supported dozens of global projects in over 30 countries while learning from hundreds of scientists, entrepreneurs, activists, policymakers, educators, and community leaders in the industry gaining a vast working knowledge of dozens of projects and the underlying principles of their operations.

He has been the subject of numerous radio shows, TV spots, and newspaper and magazine articles in central Indiana and internationally. He attended the first Cradle-to-Cradle design training held by McDonough/Braungart as well as trainings in Deep Ecology, Biomimicry, the Natural Step, LEED, Natural Capitalism, and many more.

From a fluent understanding of numerous sustainability practices and theories and to becoming a certified ZERI practitioner in the United States, Pitcher is always on the edge and is working diligently towards changing the paradigm for development and education in the 21st century.

Convened by the Greencastle Sustainability Commission (established by the City Council in 2009), Sustainable Greencastle is an open association connecting people and ideas for environmental solutions to strengthen our community, economy, culture and quality of life. Past community-wide meetings have included a sustainable design architect and a green industrial facility manager.

These grassroots gatherings have helped expand our farmers' market, create a new local food relief program, pilot a school energy conservation challenge and lead to the Putnam RISE energy efficiency effort awarded the Putnam County Community Foundation's Envision 2011 grant.
