Library hosts Smoke-Out Day

GREENCASTLE -- The Putnam County Public Library will be hosting a Smoke-Free Family Night from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday.

The library is working with the Putnam County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation program to put on the event. Meredith Williams, the organization's program director, said this all-ages event is part of the celebration for the Great American Smoke-Out.

"We're just trying to do something fun for families and get the kids involved, get a little education out there and encourage everyone to take a time out for one day and stop smoking for a day," Williams said. "Hopefully that will lead to them quitting for life."

The smoke-out was started 35 years ago as a day when smokers could quit for one day to kick the habit for good.

Williams said one of the things the event is trying to promote is a smoke-free home.

"We've really been trying to promote as an agency taking the smoke out of your home and cars," Williams said. "The Environmental Protection Agency created a campaign which is called 'Take the Smoke-free Homes Pledge.' It's been around for quite some time, so we're kind of playing off of that idea for having families come to a fun family event."

Williams said the event would include an anti-tobacco puppet show. At 4 p.m., Mental Health of Putnam will be doing the show, called "Be Smart, Don't Start."

Children can also make their own anti-smoking signs. There will also be a story reading at the event.

"It's geared towards children and it's called 'No Thanks But I'd Love to Dance,'" Williams said. "It just walks children through a story about making the right decisions and living smoke-free."

In addition to the family-friendly programs, there will be resources available for anyone who wants to quit smoking.

"If we can be of any assistance to help people quit they are welcome to come and get some more information about how they can do that and what resources are available for them," Williams said.

Williams said people who want to quit smoking can call 1-800-QUIT NOW from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. The call is free.
