Tiger Cub wrestlers suffer loss to Avon

Greencastle sophomore Kody Collins recorded the Tiger Cubs only win Tuesday by capturing the 135-weight class over Austin Smith-Harpe. The Tiger Cubs lost to Avon 59-6 on the night.

GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle wrestling team ran into a stout Avon squad Tuesday, falling to the Orioles 59-6.

The Orioles were the aggressors on the night, but Greencastle put up a fight and refused to give up in every match. Head coach Matt McComish liked the grit his team displayed on the night.

"We did fight hard and it's disappointing because we're close to picking up a few more wins and we just can't seem to get to that next level. And that's what we have to work on, getting to that next level and getting those wins I feel we're capable of getting," he said.

Greencastle's lone win came at the 135-weight class as Kody Collins pinned Avon' Austin Smith-Harpe in the second period. Collins was up 4-0 after the first period before scoring the win by fall.

The Tiger Cubs had multiple matches go into the third period before Avon was able to grab the win.

McComish said the losses sometimes come down to staying stagnant.

"Sometimes on the mat we just quit wrestling. We just have to keep scrambling and keep moving. I don't know if it's a matter of conditioning, a matter of an awareness of where we are, but those are things we're going to have to figure out," McComish.

In the 160-weight class, Aaron Landgon battled Christian Alejandro in a match where Alejandro clearly had the advantage. Langdon fought off a pin late in the first period on his back and for a full minute in the second period before being defeated by a technical fall.

McComish said that's something the team needs to continue working on to make the step to becoming a more successful team.

"That's something we work on and work on, but it's something that's hard to teach -- to not give up whenever you're on your back," McComish said. "And not giving up the pin is a big deal. When we fight off our backs it's great, but other times it looks like we don't fight off our backs as much as we should.

"That's another aspect we need to work on, but first of all we shouldn't end up there in the first place," he added.

The Tiger Cubs will next compete at the Warrior Classic at Scottsburg Dec. 29 at 9 a.m.
