GHS boys win record-setting WCC meet

Greencastle seniors Jesse Elkins and Jay Guffey have a look at their times after sweeping the top two positions in the 100 free. Guffey set new WCC records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle boys won 11 of 12 events on their way to a dominating WCC meet win at DePauw's Erdmann Natatorium Saturday.

The Tiger Sharks set five meet records on their way to a 396-point day. South Putnam was second at 251, followed by Cascade with 225 and North Putnam with 207.

Jay Guffey set new marks in the 50 free (21.83) and 100 free (48.52). Fellow senior Walter Chiarella broke the record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:04.42.

Freshman Nash Firebaugh broke the 15-year-old 100 butterfly record by two seconds with a 53.65.

The 200 medley relay of Jesse Elkins, Chiarella, Firebaugh and Guffey set a new mark of 1:40.09.

North Putnam senior Jeremy Ban prevented the GHS sweep by winning the 200 free in a time of 2:07.31.
