Cloverdale addresses two vehicle issues

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

CLOVERDALE -- Without either the town clerk/treasurer or attorney, the Cloverdale Town Council meeting had to limit some of the subjects they could approach in the first meeting 2011.

Interim utility manager Rich Saucerman brought up issues with two of the trucks the town uses.

A 2004 truck has issues with its front end and is being repaired for a cost of around $1,900. A 1997 truck is not being used.

"It's got a few issues. The transmission slips, it's been dying as you go down the road. It needs tires and brakes," said Saucerman.

The town awarded the bid for the pole barn to R.L. Quality Custom Framing for 17,387.63. The number may need to be slightly changed, because Saucerman wished to add windows to the barn door.

The pole barn will be used to shield the jetter truck from the elements. The barn will be erected between two existing barns, using parts of their structures.

The council awarded to MK Painting the job of painting the inside of the standpipe or water tower with a cost of $152,000. That approval is contingent on finding the necessary funding.

"It's one of those things that you can't side step, and next year it's not going to get any cheaper," board member Don Sublett said.

The town council discussed going with a new grant writer. Board president Cathy Tipton said that resumés had been received from both Kristy Jerrell and Terry Jones.

The council approved the purchase of a new police vehicle to replace an old Crown Victoria. The vehicle, a four wheel drive Tahoe SUV will cost $30,804.

"That's one of the things that (the police) made a statement about. They would really like to have a four wheel drive unit in case they need it from time to time," board vice president Dennis Padgett said.

The funding for the vehicle is already in place.

The council approved keeping the existing officers for 2011.

Tipton said that the planning commission is still short on members and asked that any interested members take part in it.

The council approved claim/dockets from December for a total of $150,900.

  • Now, now, what is the use of being in Law Enforcement if you can't have a nice SUV as a take home vehicle? :)

  • I'm sure that CTVFD could use a new truck from time to time!

  • I am just discussed by this. We need to round some good people up and convince them to run for these seats. We cannot keep letting this happen any more. We need GOOD Cops not a gas drinking SUV that you know as well as I do they will all be fighting to drive it. The thing will not sit for time to time the will run the tires off of it! Please!

  • SUV?

Why don't they hire a "permanent" police chief and a couple fulltime officers instead. This whole "interim" police chief position is a joke. There are hardly ever any officers working. Instead, I'll call for assistance & end up waiting for the sheriff's department to respond. (They're usually either already in town or on the interstate anyway.)Just another stupid decision.

I've heard it said before,Cloverdale could be THE financial/employment hub of Putnam County. The warehousing and industry along I-70 from Indianapolis should/could easily carry over to Cloverdale. It's a shame that it will never happen in this town due to hillbilly politics and backscratching.

  • After reading this all I can say is man I'm glad I moved away. Cloverdale you are obviously a town that will never grow thanks to those people you vote into office. You wonder why so many of us graduate and leave, never returning?? Take a good look around and you'll see your answer. We have no future there! It's sad, but it's true!

  • I am not happy about the SUV or the local police situation either. Wondering how many posters here attend the meetings? Just making comments after the fact is not a solution.
