The American Red Cross of Putnam County will be having a fundraising supper Feb. 25. Jenny Sullivan, the president of Delta Beta Tau, Robin Hazelbaker, the Waters of Greencastle dietary manager and chef, Holly Wachtel, the administrator of the Waters of Greencastle and a Putnam County Red Cross leadership councilmember, Darlene West admissions of the Water and Amanda Grimes with the Putnam Inn are all taking part in the supper.

On Friday, Feb. 25 the American Red Cross of Putnam County will be having an annual fundraiser chili supper and auction.

"It helps provide shelter, clothing, food or any other items that a family might need," Putnam County Red Cross leadership council board member Ginger Scott said. "It might be medication or eye glasses, it is all based on the need of the family."

All of the money raised at the supper will stay within Putnam County.

"It isn't about the money, It's about the help and hope that money brings," said Carol Stevens, the executive director of the American Red Cross of Wabash Valley, which includes the Putnam County unit.

Stevens said the Red Cross not only helps with disaster relief, but also with communications with people who are currently in the military.

She said the military uses the Red Cross to verify a crisis at home for soldiers. This helps them determine when and what kind of leave a soldier is sometimes granted.

Stevens said that the tragedies people experience can lead to them participating in the Red Cross.

"One family we helped over the Christmas holiday had been away shopping. As they were getting near home they heard fire trucks. As they were getting to their neighbor hood they saw smoke. Then they realized it was their home," Stevens said.

Stevens said the family lost pets in the fire.

"It was very traumatic," Stevens said. "But, as a result, one of the family members became a Red Cross Disaster Action Team member."

The chili supper is one of the main fundraisers for the Putnam County Red Cross.

"We depend on this quite a bit," said Scott.

The main course will be provided by the Waters of Greencastle, the main sponsor of the supper.

Delta Theta Tau will provide desserts for the evening, with the Putnam Inn providing beverages. A live auction with Jeff Rich will take place at the even, with proceeds going to the fire victim fund. There will be live music from Sounds unlimited by Michael Welsh.

The supper will take place on Feb. 25 at the National Guard Armory in Greencastle from 6 to 8 p.m.
