James "Coach" Huter

JJames J. "Coach" Huter, 85, of Greencastle passed away on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.

He was born on March 2, 1925 in Louisville, Ky. to James W. Huter and Mary Rose Donahue Huter.

He was a graduate of St. Xavier High School and Western Kentucky University. Mr. Huter served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He taught and "Coached" for over 46 years in high schools, including Flaget, St. Francis De Sales and Louisville Male High School in Kentucky; and at Henryville and Greencastle in Indiana and retired as the Athletic Director of South Putnam High School in 1994.

In keeping with his love for education, he was an avid reader. Coach was also active in the communities in which he lived. He received the Honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel and was named a Sagamore of the Wabash.

Mr. Huter was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 58, L.O.O.M. Lodge No. 1592, F.O.E. Aerie No. 4388, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, active with Meals on Wheels, a Democratic Party Member and past board member of the Lilly Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary.

Surviving are his children, Jay (Fred) Stevens of Brazil, Jim Huter of Brazil, Jo Corbitt of Greencastle, Jack (Janice) Huter of Hurricane, W.V., Judi Huter of Terre Haute and Jill (Kevin) McCammack of Fillmore; seven grandchildren, Jason Corbitt, Joshua (Stefanie) Corbitt, Jonathon Corbitt, Jacob Huter, Joseph Huter, John McCammack and Kate McCammack; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Corbitt and Jackson Corbitt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 202 East Washington Street, Greencastle, with Father Darvin Winters as celebrant. Entombment with honors will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home.
