John Lloyd Stamper

Dr. John Lloyd Stamper passed away peacefully at home on his 80th birthday on Feb. 10, 2011. He was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Muncie, to Dr. Joseph Herbert Stamper and Gladys Livezey Stamper. He grew up in Middletown.

Dr. Stamper received his doctor of dental surgery degree with honors from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1957. Following graduation, he served two years with the U.S. Public Health Service treating American Indian children on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Toppenish, Wash. In 1959, Dr. Stamper started his dental practice in Greencastle. He retired on June 12, 1990.

Dr. Stamper was a member of Sherwood Christian Church and the American, Indiana, and Putnam County Dental Associations. He was affiliated with the American Cancer Association in the late 60s and early 70s as county chairman or crusade chairman for seven years. From 1980 to 1985, he operated Greencastle's ski resort -- Pleasant Run Ski --located in his backyard. He was also known for his love of fishing, mushroom hunting, model airplanes, ultralights, woodworking, log homes, Putnam County Fairs, his country and his many friends and patients.

On Oct. 17, 1987, he was married to Shirley L. Corry who survives. Also surviving are his children, Sharon Thompson and husband Don of Zionsville, Suzan Stamper of Indianapolis, Joseph Stamper and wife Debbie of Lafayette and Paul Stamper of Greencastle; four stepchildren, Neil Stewart and wife Michelle of Rockford, Ill., Randy Stewart and wife Laurie of Amery, Wis., Lori Bodenner and husband Tom of Amery, and James Corry and wife Laura of Carmel; four grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren; and brother, Dr. Robert Stamper, Anderson. His parents and sister Joyce Petro, Anderson, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday. A celebration of Dr. Stamper's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Sherwood Christian Church, Greencastle, with Rev. Jim Staggers officiating.
