ROACHDALE -- Some big shoes will be left to fill at North Putnam next season.

Following a 14-1 season and a run to the IHSAA State Finals in 2010, Cougar coach Greg Barrett will be leaving Putnam County to take an assistant coaching job with Indiana State University. ISU head coach Trent Miles announced Barrett's hiring Tuesday. Barrett will work with the Sycamores' special teams, running backs and tight ends.

In Barrett's three seasons at the helm, North Putnam went 33-5 and won two West Central Conference championships.

The coach, who continued to reside in Terre Haute throughout his stint at North Putnam, has spent much of his football career in Vigo County. He played quarterback at West Vigo for his father Jay Barrett, before moving on to play defensive line for ISU.

He's also had assistant coaching stints at ISU, Rose-Hulman, West Vigo and Terre Haute North, working as an assistant for brother Chris at the two high schools.

More information will be available on Barrett's departure in an upcoming Banner Graphic.
