LAPORT -- Greencastle resident Suzanne (Stewart) Masten was recently inducted into LaPorte High School Norman J. Hubner Athletic Hall of Fame.

In her time as a LaPorte Slicer, Masten made major contributions in volleyball, basketball and track.

Masten lettered three years in volleyball as an outside hitter and was named MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior. As a junior in 1990, she was named to the Mizuno All-Star team, the Indiana All-State team and was Duneland Conference MVP.

She won four letters as a center for the Slicer basketball team and was MVP in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She was the leading rebounder as a junior and senior (567 career rebounds) and her 964 points are No. 3 on the Slicers' career charts. She was twice named to the Duneland Conference team and helped the Slicers win the sectional (1992) for the first time in 10 years.

She also earned four varsity track letters, winning or sharing MVP each season. She set the school high jump record at 5-feet-6-inches and placed sixth in the state as a senior. She also had the third-fastest hurdles time in school history.

During the summer of 1992, Masten was a member of the International Sports Association volleyball team, which traveled to China. Stewart earned a full volleyball scholarship to Purdue, where she was an inside hitter for four years. Her career highs were 21 kills against Michigan and 18 digs against Northwestern. After graduation, she served as an assistant volleyball coach at Purdue for 1 1/2 years.

Masten lives with her husband Todd and children Elle, Izzy and Stewart in Madison Township.
