Georgia Maybelle Rice, 97, Greencastle passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Georgia, better known as Maybelle, was born on Aug. 15, 1913 in Parke County, one of nine children of Albert and Rose Ann Lancaster Thompson.

Maybelle attended Putnamville High School and had been employed at G.C. Murphy and Castle Craft Jewelry in Greencastle. She was a longtime devoted member of First Baptist Church in Greencastle where she taught Sunday School for over 25 years.

Surviving are her son, Jon Rice of Greencastle; a sister, Helen Godfrey of Greencastle; sister-in-law, Kathryn Thompson of Greencastle and numerous nieces and nephews.

She married Haskel Rice on June 11, 1938 and he preceded her in death on June 24, 1992. Her sisters, Lorene Blacketer, Irene Wood, Louise Sallust and Daythel Poe and brothers, James Marion Thompson, Fred Thompson and Glen Thompson also preceded her in death.

Maybelle was a devoted homemaker and mother and a beloved aunt.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 404 Judson Drive in Greencastle. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
