Inaugural Pet Expo event slated for Saturday at fairgrounds

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

West Central Veterinary Services will host a "Pet Expo" at the Putnam County Fairgrounds from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The community is invited to enjoy the free event.

West Central veterinarian Dr. Jason Huff shared the origin of the inaugural event.

"Our clients come in and are often looking for a specific service," Dr. Huff said. "We have a number of great large and small animal resources in and around Putnam County. We thought this Expo concept would be a great way to connect the community with the service providers."

The Pet Expo will showcase more than 40 local vendors and services, ranging from dog grooming to pet adoption and animal therapy for special-needs children.

Dr. Huff added that the Pet Expo will be a chance to introduce kids to a variety of animals via a petting zoo by Red Barn Farms, and will provide an opportunity to learn about the veterinary profession. In addition to the petting zoo, children can experience an up-close look at alpacas from Santa Claus Alpacas. A "Kiddie Corner" and inflatable slide will be among other attractions for youngsters.

Educational opportunities related to animal health topics will abound, including live demonstrations of equine chiropractic and acupuncture techniques. Demonstrations by the Putnam County K-9 unit and sheep-herding Border Collies from Green Acres Border Collies will also entertain and educate the crowd.

Veterinarians and staff from WCVS clinics in Rockville, Veedersburg and Greencastle will be on hand to meet and talk with those participating in the event.

Rounding out the family fun will be giveaways and door prizes, plus free food and drink. Pets on leashes are welcome at the event. For additional information, persons can go to the West Central Veterinary Services Facebook page or call the Greencastle clinic at 301-4369.
